Patti M. Richards is an attorney and a CPA who practices tax law with The Richards Law Firm, L.L.C. She concentrates in tax law and tax-exempt organizations. In addition, she is an Adjunct Professor at the Emory University Law Center, Center for Transactional Law and Practice, teaching accounting, finance and auditing for deals.
Ms. Richards served a three year term on the IRS Advisory Counsel (IRSAC) which advises the IRS on tax policy, procedure, and administration. She was assigned to the Large and Mid-Size Business (LMSB) Subgroup (now LBI). Ms. Richards is a Past President of the American Association of Attorney-CPAs. Prior to starting The Richards Law Firm, Ms. Richards was Counsel at Powell Goldstein, LLP (now Bryan Cave LLP) in Atlanta. Previously Ms. Richards served in the Office of Chief Counsel, Internal Revenue Service National Office, Washington, DC, in the Income Tax and Accounting Division. She was also an associate in tax law with Dewey Ballantine LLP and a partner in an international tax firm, Burt, Staples & Maner LLP, both in Washington, DC.
Ms. Richards was awarded a J.D., cum laude, at Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, DC in 1990. She received a B.S., cum laude, from Centenary College of Louisiana in Shreveport, LA in 1974 and a M.A. from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA in 1976.
Ms. Richards is a member of the U.S. Supreme Court, the Virginia, District of Columbia and Georgia Bars (Tax Section Board-Sec./ Nonprofit Section) as well as the ABA (Tax Section/Tax Accounting Committee) and the Atlanta Bar Association (Audit Committee/Past Board Member and Chair of the Tax Section/Past Board Member of the Solo Practitioner & Small Firm Section/Member of the Women in the Professions Section). Ms. Richards is a Director of the American Association of Attorney-CPAs (IRS Tax Liaison Committee/Finance/ Subsidiary/Nonprofits/Compensation/Bylaws Committees). She is also a member of the State Board of Certified Public Accountants of Louisiana, the Georgia Society of CPAs (Past Pres. Buckhead Chapter/Past member of Tax Leadership Committee/Past Chair Tax Forum/Past Committee Member and Chair HealthCare Conference Committee), and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (Tax Section). She is active with the Lawyers Club of Atlanta (Past Membership Chair), the Georgia Association of Women Lawyers, the Atlanta Tax Forum (Officer/Board Member), the North Atlanta Tax Council (Board Member), and Beta Gamma Sigma Business Fraternity.
Ms. Richards is the Chairman of the Board for Quantum Leaps, Inc., a tax-exempt organization that promotes women entrepreneurship internationally and a member of its Global Brain Trust. Ms. Richards previously served as Treasurer and Parliamentarian for the Georgia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (GHCC) and previously served on the Board of Directors for The Hispanic American Center for Economic Development. Ms. Richards received awards for Outstanding Volunteer from the GSCPAs, a Distinguished Services Award from the Atlanta Bar Association for her work on the Audit Committee, and a Chairman’s Special Recognition Award from the GHCC.
